Hopeless situation with piles of bulky refuse items

CORFU. Sofas, toilet articles, window and door frames have been piled up for days on Eth. Lefkimmis Rd.
All kinds of bulky refuse objects have been piled up for days next to refuse bins opposite a big supermarket on Eth. Lefkimmis Rd. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is no longer news.
Showing complete indifference and ignoring appeals from the Cleaning Service, some irresponsible members of the public continue to dump their old furniture, household goods and building waste next to refuse bins.
The photos ssent by an Enimerosi reader are just a small sample of what is happening all over the island and which are posted across the social media.
This Enimerosi reader told us that the photos were taken on Thursday morning, 14 July. They were taken in a car park opposite a big supermarket by the radio station near Tria Gefiria.
"This situation has been building up for several days - or even weeks - and has now resulted in a huge pile of waste.
"The municipal authority is not directly responsible - the bins are emptied every day (I know this as I pass by every morning and afternoon on my way to and from work) but the rubbish that can be seen in the photos has been left outside the bins and the items (sofas, chairs, old window and door frames, broken toilet articles etc.) are too bulky to be taken by the refuse trucks."
Getting rid of bulky waste items
According to the Cleaning Service guidelines, members of the public should do the following with bulky waste items:
1. Call 15601 between 08:00 and 14:30 to arrange for electrical appliances to be picked up. They should not be dumped.
2. Hotels and tourist accommodation should also call 15601 to find out where they can take old mattresses and other such items.
3. Arrangements should be made (26610 99701 / 47520) for bulky waste items such as branches, furniture etc to go to the landfill so that they can be processed.
4. Building waste must go to the special facilities for Digging, Building and Demolition Waste (AEKK) that exist in Corfu.
They must not just be dumped outdoors or in bins.
If they are mixed up with household waste, it could lead to damage to the landfill processing and baling equipment - thus holding up refuse collection.
