CORFU. The contractor is the Consortium of Companies TERNA Energy Asset Management S.A. – MESOGEIOS S.A.

In a significant step for the issue of waste management, the contractor for the construction of the Urban Waste Treatment Unit in Corfu was announced at the headquarters of the Ionian Islands Regional Authority today, Tuesday, March 18. The official announcement was made by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis, in the presence of the Vice President of FODSA and Mayor of North Corfu, Giorgos Machimaris, as well as the Deputy Regional Governor, Spyros Argyros.

The project has a budget of 33 million euros, with the contractor being the Consortium of Companies TERNA Energy Asset Management S.A. – MESOGEIOS S.A. According to the timeline, the unit is expected to be completed within the next two years. Mr. Trepeklis stated that Corfu’s residents bear an annual cost of over 12 million euros for waste transportation, a financial burden that the state had committed to covering since 2019 but has yet to fulfill.

"What we once considered obvious is finally becoming a reality. We will soon see progress, and this will bring relief to the people of Corfu," he stated, highlighting the importance of recycling in reducing waste. A key goal and challenge of this programme is to adopt the principle that polluters will pay while those who recycle will benefit through refunds. Giorgos Machimaris described the day as historic, as this project lays the foundation for effective and sustainable waste management on the island.

The new unit will feature modern equipment and will be handed over to all municipalities of Corfu, serving the primary objective of reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills and improving the quality and efficiency of recycling. The creation of Corfu’s Integrated Waste Management Unit marks the end of a long period of instability and paves the way for an organised, efficient, and environmentally sustainable waste management system on the island.
