CORFU. OAED Director Spyros Protopsaltis says, "Sorry for the delay".

Those eligible for a council house in Agios Ioannis had to wait for 12 years to receive the keys for their new homes today. They smashed a pomegranate for luck as they stepped inside and handed out sweets.

After years of setbacks due to construction and legal problems, the gradual handing over of the new homes began today in the presence of OAED Director Spyros Protopsaltis, Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas.

Mr. Protopsaltis apologised on behalf of OAED and the first eligible families took their keys and 'first-footed' their homes. It was clearly an emotional moment for them after years of problems with continuous appeals and protests due to assurances that were never fulfilled.

It even reached the point where they squatted in half-completed houses without electricity, water or a sewage system.

Connecting the estate to the sewage network was the big problem in completing the work and the first contractor was removed and another took over.

The 'Kerkyra V' estate has 176 homes in various buildings along with 6 shops, a meeting hall and a landscaped area.

The construction of the sewage pipe is a collaboration between OAED, the Municipality and DEYAK which was signed in July 2020 and will be funded by OAED up to €1.9m.

Until the pipe is completed the sewerage system will use watertight tanks constructed by OAED and the sewage will be removed regularly by DEYAK as often as is required.

The demands continue

On behalf of the Association of those Eligible for Council Houses, Adriana Koskina posted the following on social media: "We were informed recently by OAED that a few houses will be handed over every day - about 5 houses with up to two people from each family.

I hope that the handing over of the first 5 homes today isn't just for show and then we have more delays.

It is good that the houses are being handed over and we wish all the best to the new residents!

But we won't stop our demands for the houses to be completed and all 176 families move in!"
