OAED training programmes for olive cultivation and beekeeping

CORFU. A memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Central Corfu Municipality and OAED.
The Central Corfu Municipality will participate in training programmes for the primary sector with the memorandum of cooperation that was signed today between Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, the Deputy Mayor for Tourism and Employment Panayiotis Varouchas and the Ioannina OAED vocational training centre Director Argyris Kyrkos.
The aim of the memorandum of cooperation is the implementation of two specialised training programmes on beekeeping and olive cultivation for the citizens of the Municipality.
In her statements, the Mayor referred to the need to link the primary sector with the tertiary sector and, in particular, to strengthen the production of local products.
Meropi Ydraiou said that “We believe that at a time when, in addition to the economic crisis of the previous years and the pandemic, we are also faced with the effects of the war in Ukraine on energy costs, while the unemployed and the financially weak are in an even more difficult situation.
As the Central Corfu Municipality, we are obliged to contribute to the fight against unemployment so that we can educate our fellow citizens who are working in the primary sector, to offer them an opportunity to have an income and, at the same time, to enhance their knowledge and skills.
Especially a Municipality like Corfu, with such a tradition and such a history in olive cultivation and more than 4 million olive trees, had to be a pioneer in this action and had to be the first to support our fellow citizens in this sector”.
The Ioannina OAED vocational training centre Director Mr. Kyrkos said that such programmes have not been implemented since 1983 and expressed his satisfaction that they are starting from Corfu.
The starting date of the programmes and the procedure to be followed will be announced soon.
