THE HAGUE. The Dutch caver and speleologist Rene Van Vliet lost his battle for life and passed away.
Rene had many dear friends in Corfu who met him on his many trips to the island to explore the little-known caves here.
His brother announced the sad news on Facebook: "Yesterday, my dear brother Rene lost his senseless battle, rest in peace my dear brother."
On his many expeditions Rene made many new, good friends. He wrote detailed descriptions of his dangerous explorations, searched historical sources, discovered old stories and legends and wrote many enthusiastic articles for all the local media.
"My heart belongs to Corfu!" he wrote on his Facebook profile.
The island that he so loved bids a sad farewell.
