French spearfisherman, 57, dies in Faskia area
CORFU. He was found unconscious near the islet of Ortholithí – CPR attempts by his friend and lifeguards were unsuccessful.
(Hellenic Coast Guard) Tragedy struck a 57-year-old French national who lost his life on Sunday morning, 13 September while spearfishing in the “Faskia” sea area, near the islet of Ortholithí off Corfu.
The Palaiokastritsa Port Authority was immediately informed of the incident. According to initial reports, the 57-year-old was found unconscious in the water. The other spearfisherman who was with him rushed to provide first aid, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but without success.
The man was then transported by a commercial vessel to Agios Gordios beach, where local lifeguards continued attempts to revive him, again without success.
An ambulance took the 57-year-old to Corfu General Hospital, where his death was pronounced.
An investigation and preliminary inquiry into the exact circumstances of the incident are being conducted by the First Port Department of Palaiokastritsa, under the Corfu Central Port Authority. A post-mortem examination and autopsy have also been ordered.
