CORFU. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Cleansing, Spyros Aspiotis, will appear before the 3-member Court of Misdemeanours on Tuesday 22nd at 12:00.

This follows their arrest at Temploni landfill earlier today. Charges have been brought against them by Temploni Cultural Society for offences against environmental regulations, whilst the Municipality has brought charges against members of the Society for causing damage to a Municipal Cleansing Services vehicle.

Following these developments the Mayor made the following statement:

"I consider our arrest and criminal prosecution completely unacceptable. We were carrying out our legal duties - inspecting the site of the Temploni landfill and the conditions under which dumping of refuse could not be carried out. When we haven't yet received any information about the results of investigation into the major issue of waste management, such as, for example, the sabotage at Lefkimmi landfill. We will have the opportunity to present our arguments in court on Tuesday.

Following this, there is no reason for refuse collection to stop and it has resumed today."
