ARGOSTOLI (FODSA). 70%-80% of waste bales have been transported from the now inactive Lefkimmi landfill.

The Corfu Tender Committee met yesterday, Monday 18 September, to evaluate the bids submitted for the construction of the Corfu Urban Solid Waste Treatment Plant in Temploni.

As reported by Enimerosi on 14 September, after various administrative problems, the tender for the incorporation of solid and compacted waste within the Temploni landfill is proceeding to restore the terrain and create much-needed free space after being in an awful condition in the last decade.

The project has a total budget of €64.7 million (including VAT). In particular, the construction of the Corfu Urban Solid Waste Treatment Plant will cost €34 million and the right of option €30.7 million. This project is included in the Operational Programme "Transport Infrastructure, Environment & Sustainable Development 2014-2020" with 80% of the funding coming from the European Regional Development Fund and the rest from own resources and the Public Investment Programme.

The aim of the facility, which will be able to collect 35,000 tons of mixed urban waste per year, is the recovery of recyclable materials, the compost production from pre-sorted organic waste, as well as compost of organic waste separated from mixed urban waste through mechanical sorting.

The environmental licensing for the new landfill has been completed. 70%-80% of waste bales have been transported from the now inactive Lefkimmi landfill and the contractor is expected to be paid by the Ministry of Interior for the removal of all waste bales.
