CORFU. Waste is expected to be removed from Temploni in a month - The contract for the restoration of the terrain and wall at the Temploni landfill was signed.

The contract for the restoration of the damage caused by the Ballos storm to the Temploni landfill in October 2021 is in the process of pre-contractual check.

If the bureaucratic procedures are completed, the project to repair the section of the perimeter wall at the 1st cell that had collapsed will begin within three months, as the Zakynthos Deputy Regional Governor and Ionian Islands FODSA board member Katerina Mothonaiou told Enimerosi.

The works

According to the contract, it is planned to carry out repair works at the section of the perimeter wall at the landfill's 1st cell which had collapsed, as well as works to reinforce the non-damaged sections of the wall which are in danger of being destroyed in the future.

The restoration of the terrain and the transportation and incorporation of the 90,000 cubic meters of waste within Corfu landfill's cells are also planned.

It is worth noting that, according to Ms. Mothonaiou, about 10,000 waste bales had been deposited temporarily in a plot of land near the Temploni landfill in an uncovered area. During the heavy rainfall this waste moved, fell and covered a section of the road, creating an uncontrolled flow of liquid waste, while the waste scattered posed a risk of fire.

The Ministry for the Environment has given the go-ahead a long time ago (August 2021) for the incorporation of 90,000 cubic meters of waste within the cells, while as Mrs. Mothonaiou explained, the waste bales that will not be landfilled will go to Palairos.

For the abovementioned works, the Ministry of Interior has funded the Ionian Islands Region with €1 million.

Objection

However, the Temploni Cultural Society President Magda Papanikopoulou expressed her objection regarding the quantities of waste in Temploni, pointing out that although the landfill has been closed since 2019, the piles of rubbish are growing. "How can all the waste be transported, while the piles remain there? It is not possible that there are only 10,000 waste bales, when one can see there is much more," she said.

At the Lefkimmi landfill

Regarding the restoration of the Lefkimmi Landfill, which has been halted for a long time due to a problem in the initial contract, the project will soon go ahead. In fact, the FODSA Board is expected to meet today to award the contractor who will take on the project of transporting the waste bales outside Corfu. "The removal of waste bales from the Lefkimmi landfill will have started by the end of January to mid-February," concluded Mrs. Mothonaiou.
