Corfu MP Stefanos Gikas: €30,000 emergency funding for the Old Fortress
ATHENS. The funding concerns the preparation of a study for the stabilisation of the rocky slopes in the southeastern part of the Old Fortress.
Corfu MP Stefanos Gikas met today at the Ministry of Culture with the Director of the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-byzantine Monuments Themistocles Vlachoulis and with representatives of the National Technical University of Athens research - study group, who are preparing the master plan of the two Fortresses of Corfu Town.
The MP announced that the €30,000 emergency funding has been approved for the preparation of a study to stabilise the rocky slopes in the southeastern part of the Old Fortress – a problem that became apparent following the deforestation and cleaning of the bushes and plants.
Regarding the master plan, Mr. Gikas stated that during these first 5 months since the signing of the contract, significant work has already been done in terms of the historical documentation and the pathology of all of the Fortresses’ buildings.
The master plan is expected to be delivered in the spring of 2022 and, of course, it will include guidelines for studies on the buildings that are damaged, eroded, etc., (e.g. the old British Hospital) and their uses. This is necessary for their rehabilitation to be included in funding programmes.
The next meeting with the National Technical University of Athens study group will take place in December.
