CORFU. The Deputy Regional Governor for Public Health met with Harbourmaster Yiannis Stathouros and Deputy Harbourmaster Kostas Beretoulis.

The Deputy Governor for Public Health and Welfare Melita Andrioti met with Harbourmaster Yiannis Stathouros and Deputy Harbourmaster Kostas Beretoulis yesterday. They discussed the problems being faced due to the Covid pandemic and efforts to limit its spread.

They agreed to increase the guidelines for captains regarding the measures during journeys and to increase checks on board.

They especially discussed the use of the water ambulance, which was added to the coastguard fleet on 22 November.

According to the official data, between 24/11/21 and 11/1/22 the coastguard was requested to assist in 11 transfers, 7 of which were with the water ambulance.

The water ambulance was also used to transfer doctors and nursing staff to the Diapontia Islands to vaccinate residents.

The Deputy Regional Governor said, "I would like to reiterate that the Ionian Islands Regional Authority provided €1m, via the PEP Funding Programme, for the purchase of two water ambulances for the coastguard in the Ionian Islands.

"The first was handed over to Corfu  to cover the northern islands and the second will shortly be handed over o Ithaka to cover the southern islands. It is used whenever requested by the coastguard Operations Centre in coordination with the Ambulance Centre (EKAB) Operations Centre.

"Ionian Islands Regional Authority will continue to work quietly and efficiently to utilise resources and as many funding tools as possible to serve the local communities in the Ionian Islands."
