29 road accidents and 5,749 driving offences in the Ionian Islands in June

CORFU. There were also 139 arrests, of which 107 were for driving without a licence, 15 for driving under the influence, and 17 for other offences.

The Ionian Islands Regional Police Department has released aggregate statistical data concerning road accidents and driving offences for the month of May 2025.

Traffic Accidents

In Corfu, Lefkada, Cephalonia and Zakynthos, a total of 29 road accidents were recorded, compared to 17 in 2024.

  • 2 fatal accidents, compared to 1 in 2024

  • 5 accidents with serious injuries, compared to 2 in 2024

  • 22 accidents with minor injuries, compared to 14 in 2024

From the road accidents that occurred there were: 

  • 2 deaths, compared to 1 in 2024

  • 5 people seriously injured, compared to 2 in 2024

  • 25 people slightly injured, compared to 20 in 2024

The main causes of road accidents were:

  • Driver distraction

  • Violating right of way

  • Not maintaining a safe following distance

  • Speeding

  • Violation of traffic signs

  • Driving on the wrong side of the road

Traffic Policing Actions

As part of traffic policing operations carried out in June, a total of 5,749 driving offences were confirmed, compared to 3,911 in June 2024. These included:

  • 140 for driving under the influence

  • 835 for speeding

  • 673 for not wearing a helmet

  • 134 for not wearing a seatbelt

  • 56 for using a mobile phone while driving

  • 30 for noise pollution from vehicles

  • 21 for running a red light

  • 9 for dangerous driving

  • 262 for driving without a valid licence

  • 101 for lack of insurance policy

  • 184 for MOT violations

Additionally, 139 arrests were made, of which:

  • 107 were for driving without a valid licence

  • 15 for driving under the influence

  • 17 for other offences
