Corfu Rescue Team in Zakynthos to participate in exercise with Coast Guard and Frontex
CORFU. Following an invitation from the Piraeus Central Search & Rescue Coordinating Centre.
The Nansen rescue boat of the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Rescue Team (EOD) departed today for Zakynthos with a three-member crew to participate in a search and rescue exercise (SAR Workshop) that will take place on 24-25 October in cooperation with the Coast Guard and the Frontex Agency, following an invitation from the Piraeus Central Search & Rescue Coordinating Centre.
On the first day (24 October), there will be lectures and presentations of general content on search and rescue issues by Frontex Agency officials, members of the Coast Guard, officers of various states, as well as representatives of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Air Force and the Greek Rescue Team (EOD).
On the second day (25 October), a search and rescue incident management exercise will be conducted, under the coordination of the Central Search & Rescue Coordinating Centre, in the wider maritime area of southeastern Zakynthos, with a realistic scenario involving a vessel with passengers in difficulties, people at sea etc., with cooperation between vessels and aircrafts.
The Piraeus Central Search & Rescue Coordinating Centre is taking part in the exercise with a coordinating role, along with Coast Guard patrol vessels, the offshore vessel "GAVDOS", an Italian Coast Guard patrol boat, an Italian Coast Guard helicopter, a helicopter of the Air Force and a speedboat of the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Rescue Team (EOD).
