St. Spyridon's miracle
The procession is held in remembrance of the salvation of the island following the 40-day siege of Corfu Town by the Ottoman Turks. Following a strong downpour attributed to a miracle by St. Spyridon the Turks left, never to return.
Corfu became a bastion for the whole of Europe and the defender Marshall Schulenburg was honoured by the Venetian Senate, who voted on 19 March 1717 to establish an annual procession with the sacred relics of St. Spyridon on 11 August.
The relics of St. Spyridon will remain on display 24 hours a day until the evening of Saturday 13 August.
