CORFU. A large number of worshippers and visitors gathered to commemorate the island’s miraculous deliverance from the Turkish siege in 1716.

The traditional procession of the Sacred Relics of Saint Spyridon took place in the historic centre of Corfu Town today, attended by local authorities, the island’s philharmonic bands, and thousands of members of the public..

The procession is held in commemoration of the miraculous intervention of the island’s patron saint, Saint Spyridon, who saved Corfu from the Ottoman siege on August 11, 1716.

The religious celebrations were preceded by a Divine Liturgy at the Holy Shrine of Saint Spyridon early on Tuesday morning, August 11. The service was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Isidoros of Andidon, a professor at the School of Theology of the National and Capodistrian University of Athens, who had been invited by His Eminence Archbishop Nektarios of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands.

Large numbers of Corfiots and visitors filled the streets of the Old Town to venerate the Sacred Relics and watch the procession.

The August 11 procession is one of the four annual processions of Saint Spyridon and is a highlight of Corfu’s religious and cultural identity.
