Recommendations to avoid traffic going into town centre - traffic measures

CORFU. Instead of restrictions, the Municipality will send a letter to all motorists. Traffic police at the entrance of the New Fortress moat nd at the Douglas Column.

(Announcement of measures) An open letter addressed to locals and visitors, will be widely disseminated by all means, to inform the public. The letter recommends avoiding attempts to bring vehicles into the historic centre and suggests the use of public and private parking areas around the town.

The letter is accompanied by a map indicating the private and public parking areas.

The new parking areas available this year are the Lyrikos lot and the Ionian University lot in Pallada, which replace the Port and Mational Sports Centre areas, which are no longer available.

 

  • The road (downhill) above NAOK is being made two-way for cars, but excluding coaches.
  • Coach parking is prohibited in the area from Aktaion to the entrance of the Old Fortress, and only stops for boarding and alighting are allowed. Coaches must move towards Mouragia and Spilia, where the area will be policed.
  • Doumani Street is closed at the intersection at the entrance of the Old Fortress (towards Pentofanaro) for tourist coaches and cars, with the exception of all other vehicles (taxis, city buses, carriages, emergency vehicles, etc.).
  • The Port Authority and police will monitor the intersection at Spilia to ensure smooth traffic flow.
  • The Traffic Police, assisted by the Municipality's Civil Protection personnel, will control traffic, especially from the Douglas column to the Old Palaces.
  • At the Douglas Column junction, at the intersection of Rizospaston Vouleuton with Alexandras Avenue and at San Rocco Square, the Traffic Police will decide to divert traffic in directions they deem appropriate if traffic congestion is observed.
  • Finally, the large parking area at Lyrikos will be monitored by the Municipality's Civil Protection personnel.
