Civil Protection warns about ‘Elpis’ wave of bad weather

Instructions to citizens for the upcoming wave of bad weather – The Corfu Civil Protection Department remains on 24-hour alert, in order to respond immediately to any problems that could occur.
In view of the new wave of bad weather in the coming days, the Civil Protection Service announced the following:
Successive weather systems are forecast to cause a new wave of bad weather in our country named ‘ELPIS’ in the coming days. The first weather system will affect us from Saturday 22 January 2022 and the second one, which will be more powerful, from Monday 24 January 2022.
There will be very low temperatures, heavy snowfalls, even in the plains of northern and eastern Greece and the Aegean islands, while there will also be strong winds in the east.
From Saturday, the temperature is expected to gradually drop throughout the country. It should be noted that from Monday to Wednesday temperatures will be very low and will not exceed 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. There will also be severe frost, especially in the central and northern part of the country.
Thus, the guidelines below should be followed:
1) All relevant services should take the necessary measures according to the circulars from the Civil Protection General Secretariat and plan for emergency responses.
2) The public should be informed (via the media) in order to avoid any problems and to safeguard citizens.
The Corfu Civil Protection Department recommends that citizens:
- Are informed by the responsible services and that they strictly follow the guidelines announced by the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection for snowfall and frost. In particular, citizens are asked to avoid going out, if not necessary, during the severe weather conditions, to be careful when travelling in areas where snow and ice on the road may occur and use anti-skid chains, if it is absolutely necessary to move by car.
- Follow the guidelines from the Civil Protection General Secretariat, the National Meteorological Service weather forecasts and recommendations from the local authorities (Traffic Police, Coast Guard, Fire Service etc).
If you are going to travel by car:
- Be informed of the weather and the condition of the roads.
- Have anti-skid chains and a full tank.
- Travel during the day and prefer highways.
- Inform all your relatives of the route you intend to follow.
- Plan your travel in a way not to coincide with the peak of the weather phenomena.
- Follow the guidelines from the Civil Protection General Secretariat, the National Meteorological Service weather forecasts and recommendations from the local authorities (Traffic Police, Coast Guard, Fire Service etc).
If moving on foot:
- Put on suitable clothes and shoes.
- Avoid going out if not necessary during the peak of the weather conditions (low temperatures, frost).

For information and announcements on the condition of the road, citizens can visit the Hellenic Police website (www.astynomia.gr).
