CORFU. Yet again Corfu roads are full of large objects thrown out following property renovation - exacerbating the existing refuse problem.
After much delay the Municipal Cleansing Service has issued guidelines for the proper disposal of large objects such as mattresses etc.
"The image of the Municipality is being damaged by the uncontrolled dumping of appliances and other large objects and aggregates in public spaces. This is getting worse every day due to the preparations of businesses and tourist accommodation units for the upcoming tourist season and is extremely difficult to deal with.
The problems with receiving waste at the landfill may have caused this situation but we all need to assist the Municipal Cleansing Service and work together to ensure the best possible management of waste in our everyday lives.
The Cleansing Service has repeatedly provided information on the solutions for disposal that exist so that piles of rubbish don't build up at the roadsides.
A. Call 15601, 08:00 - 14:00 to arrange for electrical appliances to be picked up. Do not dump them in public spaces.
B. Hotels and tourist accommodation units should also call 15601 to find out where they can take old mattresses and other objects.
C. Call the landfill (26610 99701/47520) to arrange to take large objects such as branches, furniture etc for them to be processed.
D. Building waste must be taken to the Excavation, Construction and Demolition Waste (AEKK) management facilities that exist in Corfu. It must not be dumped just anywhere in public spaces or in bins. If it is mixed with household waste, it can cause damage to the processing and baling machinery at the landfill - resulting in the suspension of refuse collection.
We especially appeal to businesses in Corfu Municipality to follow the above guidelines - not only because it is their responsibility to do so, but also because uncontrolled and unauthorised dumping causes aesthetic and environmental damage which indirectly also harms them."
