195 driving offences in the Ionian Islands

Between 18:00 on Saturday 29 and 02:00 on Sunday 30 April, police in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada carried out checks for the following:

- Illegal immigrants

559 vehicles and 668 individuals were checked, leading to 22 arrests - 3 in Corfu, 7 in Cephalonia, 8 in Zakynthos and 4 in Lefkada - for the following offences:

- 1 for theft
- 1 with arrest warrant outstanding
- 3 for illegal residency
- 8 for driving without a licence
- 1 for drunkeness
- 2 for environmental offences
- 1 catering establishment for playing music outwith the times allowed
- 5 catering establishments for lack of proper health certificates

There were 195 driving offences, including the following:

- 6 driving under the influence
- 3 without MOT

36 vehicles were immobilised for driving without a licence, not wearing crash helmets, driving under the influence, being uninsured and not having MOT.

There were also cases of smoking in no smoking areas.
