Arrests for DUI and dangerous driving over Carnival weekend and Clean Monday

CORFU. In one case on Saturday night a car driver was arrested and given an 8-month sentence and €1,200 fine.
(Ionian Islands Regional Police) Traffic Police carried out an increased number of checks over the Carnival Weekend and Clean Monday between 28/2 and 3/3 in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada.
There were arrests for driving under the influence with high fines and prison sentences ranging from 6 to 8 months, as well as driving licence suspension. A notable case was the arrest on Saturday night of a 49-year-old driver, who was given an 8-month sentence and €1,200 fine.
42 police units checked 1,121 vehicles.
There were 10 arrests including 8 for driving without a licence and 2 for driving under the influence.
258 offences were confirmed (123 in Corfu, 62 in Zakynthos, 38 in Cephalonia and 35 in Lefkada).
These included the following:
- 40 for speeding
- 14 for not using helmets
- 13 for driving under the influence
- 9 for not using seat belts
- 8 for driving without a licence
- 5 for MOT violations
- 2 for driving on the wrong side of the road
- 1 for dangerous driving
- 1 for using a mobile phone whilst driving
- 165 other offences
