Top opera diva lights up Achillion Palace
CORFU. Rare items from the life and work of the ΄high priestess΄ of world opera Maria Callas displayed in an exhibition at the imposing Achillion Palace.
Personal items, books with her sheet music and eight authentic costumes from the Teatro della Scala di Milano create a narrative of the history and contribution of the great soprano, who left her mark on an entire era and continues to move audiences.
The exhibition is taking place as part of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the 1821 revolution and is organised by the Hellenic Public Properties Company (HPPC) S.A. and the Management of the Achillion Museum. Co-organizers are the Maria Callas Greek Society, Ionian Islands Regional Administration and Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality.
“The aim of the exhibition is to showcase the personality of the world-famous soprano”, said Mayor Meropi Ydraiou. “Her art, her light, her artistic creativity and her significance still inspire more than just opera artists.”
As part of the exhibition, which will run until October 31, the world-famous soprano Myrto Papastefanou and piano soloist Ioannis Tsanakaliotis will perform a live concert in the gardens of the Achillion Palace on Wednesday 1 September.
On Friday 17 September at 6p.m., a special event for children will also take place.
Visiting hours are daily from 8a.m. – 8p.m., while admission will be free for Ionian Islands residents on July 11, 12 and 13.
