CORFU. Following nearly two years of correspondence between residents and municipal authorities/DIADEYAK, the Civil Protection Service was deployed in response to the flooding that occurred on Saturday.

Finally, a solution was found for the clearing of the Kotselas ditch, and evidence of its partial clearing was posted on social media on Tuesday, 2 September. This marked the beginning of the end of the ordeal faced by local residents, who have been protesting through every collective expression and by all means for at least the past two years. In the meantime, a sudden and heavy downpour had turned the area into a marsh.

An interesting example of bureaucratic management is the correspondence between the municipal services and DIADEYAK, who considered themselves not responsible for the work. They requested studies and project tenders until responsibility was officially assumed by the Technical Services. In a letter dated 28 August, they announced their decision—exceptionally, and only for this year—to carry out the clearing.

Eventually, the Municipality’s Civil Protection Service was mobilised, following the downpour that inundated everyone, and particularly the area in question. On Tuesday evening, the Service posted their ‘triumph,’ announcing the partial clearance of the ditch through which a large portion of the town’s stormwater is drained into the Chalkiopoulos lagoon.
