CORFU. The skies opened up and weaknesses in the drainage system and shoddy workmanship were exposed.

The heavy rainfall on Wednesday night mainly affected the central area of Corfu and the town. The usual spots in Spilia and the airport flooded, but the greatest threat appeared in Potamos, when the debris carried down by the river restricted the flow at the neck of the bridge, creating a risk that an overflow could flood the ground floors of the suburb.

Before midnight, municipal crews with excavation machinery attempted to open the blocked areas under the bridge.

From the very beginning of the rainfall, the storm drains on Peroulaki couldn’t handle the water, flooding the road, and together with the conditions along the river, access to Potamos was nearly impossible.

An EMAK boat was used to check on at least two people who were trapped, fortunately without any serious injuries.

Roads in Kokkiní and Kontókali were flooded.

In central Corfu, landslides and damage occurred on the road to Glyfada, as well as in northern central areas, in Paleokastritsa.

On Thursday morning, DIADEYAK crews remain wherever needed and able, while the rainfall continues.

The next day dawns in Potamos

The Municipal Fire Department and the Special Rescue Team worked hard and special mention must also be made of the members of the Motorcycle Sports Club (ALMKE) for both their assistance and the information they provided, as they were present wherever they could be of help.
