When infrastructure fails in the face of extreme weather

The resilience of the Ionian Islands’ infrastructure against extreme weather will be the focal point of the upcoming accountability session of the Ionian Regional Council.
The 4th Special Accountability Session of the Regional Authority, covering the fourth two-month period of 2025, is scheduled for Thursday, September 4, at 3 p.m. and will be held via teleconference.
A series of questions from opposition parties are expected to dominate the agenda:

Corfu’s infrastructure void – “For how much longer will Corfu remain the island of non-existent infrastructure?” - Alexandra Balou, head of the Ionian Islands Laiki SIspirosi.

Flood-hit Cephalonia and Ithaca – With another autumn and winter approaching, councillor Nikolaos Gisinis (Ionian Islands Laiki Sispirosi) demands updates on flood protection projects, stressing the need for concrete works rather than just studies.

Achilleion Palace neglected – The iconic Achilleion Palace remains “abandoned and unprotected,” - Theodoros Galiatsatos, head of ANASA.

Ferry connections – Maria Dri, leader of Menoume Ionia, raises concerns over ferry routes and the adequacy of public service connections between the islands.

Road safety in Corfu – Overgrown roadside vegetation poses serious dangers on the regional road network - Alexandros Michalas (ANASA).

Unfinished roadworks in Zakynthos – “What will become of the planned traffic junctions on the Zakynthos–Volimes provincial road and the Zakynthos–Keri national road?” - Dionysios Giakoumelos (ANASA).

Unpaid dock workers – Zakynthos dock workers remain unpaid for more than a year despite having contributed to efforts to shield the island from swine fever - Panayiotis Sofos (Ionian Islands Laiki Sispirosi).

Farmers under pressure – “Once again, honest farmers are paying the price,” said Athina Arvanitaki (Menoume Ionia), highlighting rural grievances.
