CORFU. "We kindly ask the public to show responsibility and solidarity, especially towards the elderly, people who are alone, and individuals with special needs."

(Central Corfu Municipality) The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands and the Deputy Mayor for Health have issued guidelines for residents about protective measures for possible upcoming heatwaves, with temperatures that may exceed 40°C.

In order to protect public health, especially that of vulnerable groups, we urge all citizens to follow the following prevention and self-protection guidelines:

Protective Measures

General Guidelines:

  • Stay in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned areas.

  • Avoid unnecessary outings, especially during peak heat hours (11:00 – 17:00).

  • Wear light, light-coloured clothing and a hat; use sunscreen.

  • Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding alcoholic, highly sugary, or caffeinated drinks.

  • Eat light meals, including fruit and vegetables.

  • Take frequent cool showers or use wet towels to stay refreshed.

  • Reduce physical activity and exercise.

For Vulnerable Groups (elderly, children, individuals with chronic conditions):

  • Offer help and support to the elderly and people who live alone.

  • Ensure they take their medications properly and monitor for any worsening of symptoms.

  • Maintain regular contact with a doctor if there are known health issues.

Special Attention:

  • Elderly individuals, infants, and those with chronic conditions (heart disease, respiratory issues, diabetes) require increased care.

  • Vulnerable individuals should be monitored daily by relatives or caregivers.

Air-Conditioned Spaces –

CENTRAL CORFU MUNICIPALITY:

The Municipality is prepared to provide air-conditioned shelters for citizens in case of an emergency, if instructed by the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

  • The locations of these spaces will be announced promptly through the official website of the Municipality.

  • Citizens are kindly asked to follow announcements regularly and comply with instructions from the competent authorities.

We kindly ask all citizens to demonstrate responsibility and solidarity, especially toward the elderly, people who are alone, and individuals with special needs.
With simple but meaningful actions, we can prevent unfortunate situations and safeguard everyone’s health.

Protecting ourselves from extreme weather is a responsibility we all share.
