CORFU. A mutual intention was expressed to establish a twin town relationship between Corfu and a town in France, aiming to strengthen cultural and tourism ties.

(Central Corfu Municipality) The Consul General of France in Greece, Diane Roeser, accompanied by the French Consul in Corfu, Florent Kavada, was received yesterday at the Old Town Hall by the Deputy Mayor for Sustainable Tourism Development and Public Relations, Spyros Chalikiopoulos.

During the meeting, the Deputy Mayor gave a brief historical overview of the iconic San Giacomo building, highlighting its enduring role in Corfu’s cultural life. He also made special mention of the architectural influence left by the French during their presence on the island.

Mr. Chalikiopoulos presented the upward trend of the French market in Corfu, which in recent years has been steadily recovering and is now among the most important inbound tourism markets. He referred to the municipality’s strategic actions to strengthen this high-quality, premium market, through consistent participation in tourism fairs in France.

In response to Ms. Roeser’s questions about the municipality’s tourism policy, the Deputy Mayor outlined the strategic direction of the municipal authority, focusing on efforts to extend the tourist season and enhance alternative forms of tourism.

At the same time, he spoke about opening up to new emerging markets, such as China, North America, and the Middle East, the latter already being served by two direct flights from Dubai, with a third expected in 2026 as part of the creation of a strategic hub connecting to Asia.

The Deputy Mayor stressed the need to further strengthen relations with the French Embassy, and in this context, proposed expanding cooperation in the fields of gastronomy and culture, including the participation of French chefs in the International Gastronomy Festival, held annually on the island under the auspices of the Municipality of Central Corfu.

Finally, a mutual intention was expressed to establish a twin town relationship between Corfu and a town in France, with the aim of strengthening cultural and tourism ties.
