(Central Corfu Municipality Press Office) Spyros Chalikiopoulos, the Deputy Mayor for Sustainable Tourism Development, welcomed a large delegation of Chinese students participating in a familiarisation programme with Greek culture at the Old Town Hall today.
This programme signifies the culmination of collaboration between the Laboratory directed by the Dean of the School of Humanities, Professor Athanasios Efstathiou, of Sichuan University and the Australian Archaeological Institute in Athens. You can find the recent article by Enimerosi here.
Sichuan Province is situated in the southwest of the country, with a population of 83 million. Sichuan University is one of the most dynamic, boasting approximately 70,000 students and offering a wide range of disciplines. The students visiting the Old Town Hall represent diverse fields, spanning from Medicine and Mechanical Engineering to humanities studies.
During the meeting, Mr. Chalikiopoulos presented to the students the architectural, historical, and cultural background that the island of Corfu carries, emphasising the developmental opportunities it presents as an educational destination.
He congratulated Professor Athanasios Efstathiou of the Ionian University and his collaborators for this significant outward-looking initiative. This initiative not only enhances the prestige of the educational institution but also lays the foundation for the development of educational tourism in Corfu. Mr. Chalikiopoulos stated thatthe new municipal authority will actively support, through all available means, the promotion and strengthening of the role that the Ionian University is called to play in the broader region.
