ATHENS. They were awarded to a PhD candidate and a graduate of the Department of Music Studies.

(Ionian University) The Honorary Scholarship Award and Donor Recognition Event took place at the residence of the American Ambassador to Greece and Honorary President of the Fulbright Foundation's Board of Directors, George Tsounis, on Thursday, June 13.

This year, the Foundation awarded a total of 73 Fulbright scholarships for studies and research in the USA. Two researchers from the Ionian University are among the recipients.

Georgos Gargalas, a PhD candidate from the Department of Music Studies, received a scholarship for the University of North Texas in Denton, for research in Interactive Electroacoustic Music Composition.

Danae Kalpaki, a graduate of the Department of Music Studies and the Master's Programme in Music Performance/Singing, received a scholarship for a second master's degree at the Fredonia State University of New York, in Fredonia, in the same field.

The event was opened by the CEO of the Fulbright Foundation, Artemis Zenetou, who emphasised the importance of the scholarship programme for highlighting Greece as an "educational destination" and for "building an inclusive future for both countries."

In his address, the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, a former Fulbright scholar, congratulated the scholars, noting that they are "the unofficial ambassadors of the ethos of each country" and emphasised the importance of the scholarship programme, which, as he said, "builds bridges" between the USA and the participating countries, including Greece.

Ambassador Tsounis also congratulated the scholars, noting that "education is what helps each person become the best version of themselves" and that "it helps us understand different viewpoints, the different perspectives of different cultures."

The Fulbright Foundation offers scholarships to Greek and American citizens, serves as the official information centre for studies in the United States, and provides information on study programmes in Greece. Since its establishment in 1948, the Fulbright Foundation in Greece has awarded more than 6,000 scholarships, creating an active, dynamic, multifaceted, and cohesive network of scholars.

Congratulations to Danae and Georgos!
