CORFU. Ekkinisi puts the blame on those responsible - the Church, police and local authority - and also calls on everyone to get vaccinated.

The local party Ekkinisi has spoken out with regard to the public gatherings on Good Friday and Easter Saturday, which resulted in the large number of infections this last week and said that on the day that tourism officially 'opened' the situation with Covid in Corfu had worsened.

Ekkinisi puts the blame on those responsible - the Church, police and local authority - and also calls on everyone to get vaccinated.

Ekkinisi statement:

On Friday 14 May - the day that Greek tourism officially 'opened' - Corfu was included in the deep red category on the epidemiological map of Greece due to the large number of infections on the island this last week. This was predicted and predictable.

The effects of what happened on Good Friday and Easter Saturday on Corfu as a tourist destination have now become obvious two weeks later.

Are those responsible going to finally accept their responsibility or are they going to continue to hide behind statements that only make people angrier? The Archbishop is responsible for not adhering to the measures outside the churches - with large crowds gathering in Corfu Town. Having liberally handed out fines throughout the lockdown, when there was a real problem the police decided to just make announcements and recommendations so as not to spoil the festive spirit.

Worst of all was the local authority, led by the Mayor, which, having announced that there would be a firework display at midnight (whether or not it was officially announced is of no matter as everyone knew about it), then said that it did it in order to reduce the size of gatherings and that the chaos on Saturday night was due to the lack of self-control by the public.

The irresponsible authorities need to be held to account for the situation they created with the unprecedented spread of the virus and the economic catastrophe that awaits us.

Ekkinisi calls on everyone to immediately book their vaccination appointments so that they themselves can be protected from the virus and to save tourism on the island.
