Opening of Old Fortress Savorgnan Rampart for cultural events

CORFU. The Mayor, Antiquities Director and representatives from DIPETHE (Municipal & Regional Theatres) and Corfu Stage proudly presented the result of their efforts.
The Savorgnan Rampart at the Old Fortress has been renovated and is now available for public use. It was decided to convert the area into a venue for cultural events, thus providing yet another venue for summer evenings at the beautiful Corfu iconic landmark site. The first performance will be a Goldoni comedy (28 - 31/7) and the 250-seat theatre will be an important venue for DIPETHE and used for various other performances.
A press conference was held with Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos, Antiquities Inspectorate Director Tenia Rigakou and representatives from DIPETHE and the Corfu Stage Douka, Hirdaris and Darmanis. The project is part of 'Fostering Creativity and Connecting Cultural Assets through Monuments' (RyTHM) in the European Territorial Cooperation Programme Interreg IPA Greece - Albania 2014 - 2020 and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Greek State. As part of the project the Savorgnan Rampart at the Old Fortress was renovated and has been opened to the public.
The project was a collaboration between the Ministry for Culture & Sport, Corfu Antiquities Inspectorate (leading partner), Corfu DIPETHE and the Municipality of Finiq in Albania (partner). Corfu Stage will be responsible for performances.
The first performance will be Carlo Goldoni's comedy "The Chioggia Scuffles". Goldoni was an important 18th century Italian writer and the play, which takes place in a fishing village near Venice, has been translated from Venetian to Corfiot dialect.
Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos declared himself very happy with the four performances that will be put on at the Savorgnan Rampart - the first of a series of events that will make full use of this important Corfu resource. "I'm also happy," he went on to say, "to see the development of communication between regions and organisations as a result of our cross-border efforts."
He pointed out that DIPETHE has now been established for 22 years. "I was its first President and now bring my term in office to a close as DIPETHE President."
"I was happy to accept the proposal from DIPETHE President Akis Hirdaris to work together in submitting the Rhythm application to the Interreg IPA Greece - Albania Programme," said Antiquities Inspectorate Director Tenia Rigakou. "It is not the first time that we have taken part in cross-border programmes with Albanian regions. We worked with Buthrotum previously and this time we chose Ancient Finiq - an area of great archaeological interest and with important ties to Corfu. The aim of the programme is threefold: promotion of the monuments, making them more accessible and putting on cultural events."
"We are proud of the result," said Barbara Douka, DIPETHE Artistic Director, "because performances will take place at a wonderful venue which is completely in harmony with its natural environment. Aside from the artistic aspect of the project, the ongoing international relations involved in the programme are of great importance to us."
Corfu Stage President Spyros Darmanis talked about the three reasons that Corfu Stage took part in the programme. This year is Corfu Stage's 50th anniversary, the opening of this excellent venue and the Goldoni comedy which is extremely appropriate to Corfu. In conclusion, the director Nota Darmani mentioned all those involved in putting on the play.
