CORFU. After more than 24 hours the package at Corfu Post Office was removed at 5pm on Friday evening.
It was well over 24 hours after the incident on Thursday morning and just after Enimerosi's report that nothing had been done about the package that the Civil Protection General Secretariat gave instructions for it to be removed from the Post Office. The operation was carried out by the Fire Service with all necessary precautions.
The National Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) didn't come to the island as regulations dictate and according to Deputy regional Governor Nikoletta Pandi the package will be taken initially to the Corfu branch of the State Chemical Lab.
However, if something is found, it is not certain that the lab here has the necessary reagents to carry out a proper analysis and a decision will be taken then as to how to proceed.
At least the Post Office can now be disinfected and resume normal operation as soon as possible.
