CORFU. The promotion of Corfu cuisine in Magna Graecia has been growing in success with Chef Marina Beska and MedTaste - a culinary trip organized by the Venice-based Marco Polo System, which has been operating in Italy and Greece for the past 20 years.
The MedTaste initiative is a small culinary odyssey which at its first two stops in Sicily (Nicosia and Palermo) attracted great public interest.
The next region to be visited is Calabria, where there will be two stops – on 14 November at Croton and 15 November at Cosenza (at the Parco d’Arte Alt Art, coinciding with the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Greece).
There is a mythical aspect to the stop at Croton. In Homer’s Odyssey, Corfu - the starting point for Marina’s trip - was ruled by King Alcinous, who was the brother of Croton, the founder of the Ionic city in Calabria. The event at LeStanza (at the old port of Croton) is being organized in collaboration with the journalist Gabriella Cantafio and the restaurant owner Gaetano Nicoletta. Moussaka, bourdeto, bianco and other dishes will help build a new and delicious cultural bridge!
Following these two stops, on 18 November Marina will visit Apulia, where she and MedTaste have been invited to the most famous school of cookery in southern Italy, Med Cooking School – ALMA Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiano in Ceglie Messapica.
With initiatives such as MedTaste, the Marco Polo System is bringing the two coastal areas closer together – their histories, traditions and their products from land and sea. Marina Beska is the owner of the well-known restaurant ‘To Tavernaki tis Marinas’ (Marina’s Little Taverna) in the old town of Corfu, between the Jewish Quarter and the Venetian Fortress.
The idea came from Venice and forms part of a network dedicated to the European Silk Road. MedTaste has become an opportunity for communication and collaboration between the two countries, using the language of culture, taste and production. The Italian publishing company Einaudi Editore is a member of the group and throughout Marina’s trip they are promoting their new book A Tavola, a collection of writings by important authors focussing on the kitchen and cooking in literature.
It offers an opportunity for local promotion and intercultural dialogue as part of the Collaboration Agreement signed by the mayor of Corfu, Kostas Nikolouzos and the president of the Marco Polo System, Pietrangelo Pettenò. You can find an account of the trip – in two languages – on the Facebook Page ‘verotour 2017 medcult - european silk road’.
