CORFU. The closure will cause problems for those travelling at that time.
For the first time, Corfu AIrport will close from the night of 9 January until the night of 24 January for resurfacing work that Fraport needs to carry out on the runway. Those wishing to travel at that time will be forced to go overland, adding at least six hours to their journey time.
The President of Corfu Civil Aviation Employees Union Dimitris Roussos said:
"Only helicopter ambulance flights will be able to land at the airport, which will close completely meaning that people will not be able to travel by air for the first time in the airport's history. Fraport has issued a NOTAM.
Furthermore, the runway will be shortened allowing only a shorter length for landing and taking off for a period of time. This is all happening without the usual 'fanfare', press releases etc.
It should be noted that in the past, when the airport was managed by the Civil Aviation Authority, resurfacing work was carried out on the runway by closing off a section at a time allowing flights with propeller aircraft, which require a shorter runway length, and in collaboration with what was then Olympic Airways flights didn't stop even for one day!"
According to Dimitris Roussos, it is said that the airport will close for another two weeks in February although this has not been officially announced yet.
