CORFU. Corfu MP Gikas’ announcement is full of praise. A reality check comes from the comment of the CAA employees’ president, Dimitris Roussos.

Corfu MP and Deputy Minister of Shipping Stefanos Gikas shared photos with CAA personnel to announce the hiring of six new air traffic controllers and the replacement of the radar at Agii Deka.

In his announcement, Deputy Minister Stefanos Gikas stated that he visited the training class of newly hired air traffic controllers, who are expected to start work in May 2026.

He also highlighted that the CAA is launching an open international tender this week to procure and install eight modern radar surveillance systems with Enhanced Mode-S capability and updated specifications, fully aligned with current regulations. Among these systems is the radar at Corfu Airport.

Commenting on the announcement, Dimitris Roussos, president of Corfu CAA employees, noted that the installation of the new radar will likely take four to five years due to the length of the international procurement process, while the new controllers in training are expected to become fully operational at Corfu Airport by 2027.
