Four Turkish nationals have been arrested following the rescue of 88 migrants from the sea off Paxos on Friday evening. The migrants were rescued and taken on Friday night to Igoumenitsa Port in an operation coordinated by the Central Search & Rescue Coordinating Centre.

In the initial investigation conducted by Igoumenitsa Port Authority in collaboration with the Department for Security and Protection of Sea Borders it was found that four Turkish nationals were involved in the illegal transportation of the migrants by boat. The four were then arrested.

According to the Maritime Ministry, the traffickers were transporting 84 foreign nationals who didn't have travel documents from the Turkish coast to Italy for 8k-9k Euros per person in an operation which put their lives at risk. Following the rescue of those on board, the sailing vessel sank in international waters.

In collaboration with Igoumenitsa Port Authority, the Department for Security and Protection of Sea Borders is examining all the evidence and looking into the possible involvement of the four arrested in other similar cases.
