CORFU. Prices still remain over €2 but they are up to €0.40 cheaper than they have been recently.
The price of petrol is slowly but steadily dropping at Corfu filling stations, providing some relief for households hit by the cost of living.
The unprecedented recent upward spiral in prices has at last started to reverse, to the benefit of consumers who can now find petrol at cheaper prices.
Although prices still remain over €2 at Corfu filling stations, they are up to €0.40 cheaper than they have been recently.
Corfu Petrol Dealers Association president Antonis Sakkos told Enimerosi that prices are expected to be back at the level they were last year by Christmas and for unleaded petrol to be available at €1.65-1.70 per litre.
"We can see prices dropping as the decrease in international prices has also reduced refinery selling prices," he said.
According to the Ministry of Developmen and Competitiveness Liquid Fuel Price Monitor, the price of unleaded petrol in Corfu today, 8 August, varies from €2.085 to €2.17 per litre.
Mr. Sakkos reckons that prices may soon drop below €2. An increasing number of filling stations in Athens and Thessaloniki are already selling unleaded petrol for less than €2 as they get their new deliveries at lower prices.
As a reminder, prices at Corfu filling stations peaked in the middle of June at almost €2.50 per litre, heating oil was over €2.15 and 100-octane unleaded was almost €2.60.
Consumers still purchasing sparingly
Although prices are now dropping, Mr. Sakkos says that consumers are still being very careful and purchasing sparingly. "They have got used to spending carefully and are still reluctant to change. The same applies to the tourists."
