The candidates were judged by a committee chaired by Mr. Vrettakos, head of the Hellenic Recycling Organisation.

The 1st prize for "Recycling Programme with sorting at source in collaboration with volunteers or NGOs" in the category "Awards for 1st Level Local Authority Organisations" was presented to North Corfu Municipality for the development of 104 recycling centres in schools, hotels, the voluntary Green Spot network, local councils and cultural and sports associations.

North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris and Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Environment & Public Relations Spyridoula Kokkali received the Award from the Deputy Minister for the Interior Stelios Petsas.

In his address, the Deputy Minister for the Interior called on all those involved in 1st and 2nd level local and regional authorities to work for recycling to be at the heart of all Greek families and for the challenge of facing climate change to become an opportunity.

Mr. Petsas praised the efforts of the award-winning Municipalities and Regions in embracing the ecological path of sustainable development and taking on brave initiatives and investing in the necessary infrastructure. He said that these policies have multiple benefits for citizens and, by extension, for the planet as they ensure a significant environmental impact and contribute to the response to the difficult conditions created by the climate crisis.

North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris expressed his thanks for the honour given to North Corfu Municipality with the Award and said, "Recycling is a way of life and protection of the environment is a pact for survival and a condition for development. It is a part of the Local Plan for Integrated Waste Management, which North Corfu was one of the first Municipalities to sign up to. For this endeavour to succeed, we must invest properly in the community, the younger generations, young people, schools and the academic community.

The response of our fellow citizens will determine success," he said and added, "We are planning to do a lot more in order to develop and complete our high goals. North Corfu, which is an important tourist destination internationally, is taking significant action to protect the environment and members of the public, organisations, educational institutions, groups and businesses are all actively and effectively contributing to this endeavour.
