(Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality) A large number of children took part in an educational event for primary school pupils on Thursday, June 5, World Environment Day, in Upper Square, aiming to raise awareness about recycling.

Through group activities and discussions, the pupils had the opportunity to learn about the proper management of recyclable materials and to become more aware of the importance of environmental protection, both on an individual and collective level.

During the event, commemorative reusable bags, small individual paper bins for battery collection and information leaflets were distributed.

The event was an initiative of the Central Corfu Municipal Department of Cleaning Services and Circular Economy, co-organised with the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, the Regional Department of Education and Corfu Department of Primary Education.

The Deputy Mayor of Cleaning Services and Circular Economy, Spyros Nerantzis, stated: "The educational activity that took place fosters a conscious choice for our future. We all contribute to prevention, recycling and the creation of a sustainable planet. Collaboration and outreach between institutions and schools form the foundation for cultivating active and responsible citizens.

We thank the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Red Cross, the staff of the Cleaning Services and Civil Protection Departments, and our municipality’s environmentalist, Aggeliki Bairamoglou, for the excellent organisation of the event.

Above all, we thank the children — our hope for the planet’s future!"

The event was carried out with the participation of the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HERRCo), the textile recycling company EASTWEST, the used cooking oil recycling company COREL–Green Oil, and the companies Appliance Recycling S.A. and Battery Recycling AFIS S.A.
