CORFU. Unanimous decision from the Municipal Council.

Central Corfu Municipality aims to set up a network of bins to collect clothing and is planning to sign a contract with a specialist company.

The Municipal Council yesterday voted unanimously in favour of the proposal from the Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services Yiannis Seremetis to obtain 15 bins for the recycling of clothing which will be placed at various locations in Central Corfu.

There are already two such bins in Corfu - one next to the KEP office in the centre of town and the other in Sinies, North Corfu which have had an excellent response from the public.

These two bins were set up in collaboration with Recycom and the Social Cooperative Enterprise 'All Together for the Corfu Environment' but up to now the municipalities hadn't taken further action in this sector of the circular economy.

North Corfu

Clothes recycling, however, is beginning to play a bigger part in the recycling efforts of the municipalities led by North Corfu Municipality, which recently signed a contract of cooperation with the Social Cooperative Enterprise and all that remains is to set up the collection points, which will be happening in a few days.

In this way, an alternative method of managing textile materials in the municipality will soon be implemented.

Following the decision of the Municipal Council on Monday evening, the issue will now go to the Financial Committee which will define the parameters and prepare the invitation for tenders.

Spyros Neratzis said that, all going well and if all the necessary procedures go smoothly, it is expected that the Central Corfu Municipality will be able to sign an agreement with the contractor to set up the recycling bins in 2021.
