CORFU. North Corfu Municipality is collaborating with ΄All Together for the Corfu Environment΄.

Following the collaboration with the Sinies Social Cooperative Enterprise 'Syn. Praxi' for the recycling of recyclable materials and mattresses, North Corfu Municipality, represented by the Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Environment and Public Relations Spyridoula Kokkali, will now collaborate with the Social Cooperative Enterprise 'All Together for the Corfu Environment' headed by Spyros Neratzis and based in Agios Georgios Pagon.

The collaboration will involve the collection, reuse and utilisation of textile materials. At the moment these materials are not sent for recycling by the Municipal Centres for Sorting Recyclable Materials (KDAY).

The agreement was signed on 22 May by North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris and the Social Cooperative Enterprise President Spyros Neratzis. Also present were the Municipal Council President Panayiotis Papadatos and Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Environment and Public Relations Spyridoula Kokkali.

Spyridoula Kokkali made the following statement:

"With this collaboration, North Corfu Municipality is taking another important step in recycling and is organising extensive waste management in response to the current increased demands. With waste management being a major issue both in Corfu and the whole of Greece we are progressing steadily towards a sustainable future.

The strict but fair European legislation, via the National Waste Management Plan (ESDA), has set high goals with regard to recycling / recovery of materials and local authorities are now obliged to take immediate action and provide effective solutions. For a newly-established municipality such as that of North Corfu working together with Social Cooperative Enterprises is vitally important with regard to waste that is not easy to recycle, such as mattresses, bulky objects and clothing.

The collaboration with 'All Together for the Corfu Environment', which has itself been able to send 46 tons of clothing for recycling and 34 tons of bottle tops, meaning that they don't go to the Temploni landfill, is expected to be fruitful.

The greatest significance, however, is the fact that a collaboration between North Corfu Municipality and the two worthy Social Cooperative Enterprises, along with the regular separate collection of recyclable materials at the 77 recycling centres in the network, is laying a solid foundation for the cultivation of a recycling mentality in all our citizens."
