CORFU. Church members and priests were waiting outside the Courthouse to show their support for the Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos & Diapontia Islands.

Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos & Diapontia Islands, arrived at the Courthouse just before 09:00 on Monday 19 October accused of violation of the safety measures for the coronavirus pandemic.





There are, in fact, two cases - the first is that he violated the legislation and Joint Ministerial Decision by conducting a service on Palm Sunday with the procession of St. Spyridon's sacred relics with more than the allowed number of people present. The second is regarding the sermon that he gave at a service on 25 March encouraging believers to say that they were going out for exercise and then to go to church.





In the first case, along with the Archbishop, the following are also standing trial - Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos and Municipal Director for the organisation of ceremonies and events Fotis Skourtis.



Due to her profession (lawyer), Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, who also stands accused in the first case, will be tried at the Court of Appeal.



A large number of church members gathered outside Corfu Courthouse on Monday morning to show their support for the Archbishop and Archbishops from other parts of Greece have also expressed their support. According to information, these are the Archbishops from the following areas - Kastoria, Dimitriado & Almyros, Piraeus, Serres & Nigrita, Syros, Zichno & Nevrokopi, Serbia & Kozani, Patras, Kythira, Aitolia & Akarnania, Lagada, Glyfada, Mount Athos, Larissa & Tirnavos and Kalavryta & Aigalia as well as the former Archbishop of Kalavryta Ambrosio.
