CORFU. The atmosphere was fraught with tension and turmoil following the court΄s decision.

There was great commotion when the 3-member Court of Misdemeanours, following the 2-day trial, found the Corfu Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Cleansing guilty of attempting to dump refuse in the overfull Temploni landfill facility and imposing an 8-month prison sentence, suspended for three years.

The first reactions came right after the announcement of the verdict, as the prohibition of dumping at the facility means there is a danger of refuse gathering on the roads. Members of the Chamber of Commerce as well as residents who had been following the trial expressed their distress at the nightmare awaiting us this summer with the roads full of rubbish.

Corfu MP Kostas Pavlidis was strident when he said that the decision not only condemned the local authorities but also the whole of Corfu.

Coming out of the courtroom, the Corfu Mayor got involved in altercations with the Temploni residents who had brought the charges of violation of the environmental regulations. Kostas Nikolouzos said that he had made every effort to persuade the residents' association to allow some time for a solution to the waste management problem to be found, but following this verdict he can do no more.
