Corfu businesses calling for ΄common front΄ on when music can be played

CORFU. The Restaurant & Catering Union is seeking support from tourist businesses and has invited them to a meeting of 10 bodies at 11:00 on Saturday.
Restaurant and catering businesses are calling for a 'common front' with businesses involved in tourism to support their demand that music be allowed until 00:30 during the week and until 01:00 at weekends.
The Union is inviting 10 bodies to a meeting at the offices of Corfu Federation of Professionals, Manufacturers & Traders (OEBEK) at 11:00 on Saturday.
The following have been invited to the meeting: Corfu Chamber of Commerce; OEBEK; Trade Association; Hoteliers Association; Tourist Guides Association; Association of Travel Agents; Ionian Commerce and Enterprise Federation; Corfu Federation of Tourist Accommodation Professionals; 'Taxiarchos' Taxi Association and Corfu Old Town Association.
It says the following in the invitation: "A declaration of your support will help us in our fight because we consider it unfair and damaging for the local economy and the tourist industry, which we all need, especially after the two years of the pandemic. We are all links in the economic chain which lives, exists and develops through tourism. We say yes to the extension until 00:30 during the week and until 01:00 at weekends."
"Allies"
This is the first official reaction from businesses following the Local Town Council's rejection of an extension beyond 23:00.
Although the decision was only a recommendation, businesses reacted by trying to find allies to support their demands for an extension to the time that music is allowed. The meeting will take place a few days before the matter is discussed at the Quality of Life Committee.
"We are requesting the support of other bodies that are involved in tourism," the Restaurant & Catering Union General Secretary Nikos Latsas told Enimerosi.
He said that businesses cannot take it any longer - restaurants, cafes and bars start to empty after 23:00 and there is no life in the town, leading to a significant drop in turnover.
Quality of Life Committee
Deputy Mayor and President of the Quality of Life Committee Theoharis Yiotis told Enimerosi that the committee will meet next week to discuss the matter, although a definite date has not been fixed yet.
According to Mr. Yiotis, the meeting will decide on whether or not there should be an extension and for how long, taking into account all the factors and legal issues. It is the Central Corfu Municipal Council, however, which has the final word and will be called upon to find a solution.
There is a council meeting planned for Thursday 21 July, but it is not considered feasible to discuss the matter then as the Quality of Life Committee has not fixed a date for its own meeting yet. The next scheduled meeting of the Municipal Council is on 27 July.
