Municipal Council meetings to be held in the Municipal Theatre

CORFU. There was a unanimous decision at today΄s meeting - which was like a dress rehearsal - to hold council meetings there for at least the next four meetings in June.
There was an extra reason for the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Council meeting in the Municipal Theatre today.
It was, in essence, a dress rehearsal for at least the next four meetings in June, which will take place in the theatre.
This was the main purpose of today's first meeting (there will be a second today to elect the new Council Secretary). To agree to hold Municipal Council meetings at the theatre, which can accommodate a large number of people whilst maintaining proper distances as required by public health regulations post-lockdown.
The Council voted unanimously in favour of using the theatre - although there was some grumbling about for how long this would go on.
So for the rest of June, at least, Council meetings will be as can be seen from today's photos at the Municipal Theatre.
In the post-lockdown period, following the previous teleconferences there will now be meetings behind closed doors with all the proper safety measures - antiseptic and masks for whoever wants to wear them (nobody wanted to hide their smiles today) - as well as proper social distancing between councillors, naturally.
There was also pleasure at the high-speed internet with speeds of 100Mbps inside the building - satisfying both the Deputy Mayor for Digital Policy & Works Panayiota Tzanne and Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros.
The lives of both councillors and the media will be made much easier with fast (and free) internet - a pilot programme for which has been started by the Municipality in the centre of town.
Credit is due to the leader of the 'Kerkyra 180' party, who helped with the set-up and seating along with Fotis Skourtis, who prepared the theatre to seem as if it had always held Council meetings.
Only the Mayor had some complaints about the 'new normality' - Meropi Ydraiou had to sit all alone behind a table on stage, like a teacher in front of her pupils - or like someone being punished.......
"The loneliness of the tightrope walker," she said jokingly.
