Mountains of rubbish in South and Central Corfu – New decree expected to resolve the issue from Monday

South and Central Corfu are facing an emergency situation, with massive amounts of rubbish flooding the roads and creating severe difficulties for residents and tourists alike.

Ironically, the problem does not stem from waste collection itself, since the municipality's contract with the collection contractor remains valid and operational. Rather, the crisis has been caused by the expiration of the municipality's agreement with the facility responsible for receiving and disposing of the waste, leaving nowhere for the collected rubbish to be deposited.

Countdown to a solution

A solution to this serious problem is expected at the beginning of the week. According to reliable sources, the new Government Gazette decree is scheduled to be signed on Monday, 22 June, by the General Secretary for Waste Coordination and Management at the Ministry of Environment.

Immediately after the decision is signed and officially published, the administrative deadlock will be lifted and the removal of the accumulated rubbish from the roads will begin at once, bringing relief to the affected areas of the island.
