΄Spring΄ at Capodistrias Museum - works in progress
CORFU. The former garage building - an interwar period structure - is being restored to function as a multi-purpose space for educational and research programmes, events, the Capodistrias Library with access to the Ioannis Capodistrias digital archive.
In 2024, two very important projects are unfolding to enhance the experience and operation of the Capodistrias Museum.
The former garage building – an interwar period structure – is being restored to function as a multi-purpose space and the physical headquarters of the Capodistrias Study Centre. In this 'new' building, among other things, educational and research programmes and events will be organised, and the Capodistrias Library will operate with a reading room and provide permanent access to the Ioannis Capodistrias digital archive for study.
The restoration and new use of the building has been made possible thanks to its inclusion in the LEADER Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 investment programme.
The aim of the study is to develop the management plan-proposals for the garden, where the necessary work for the care of the vegetation and biodiversity of Koukouritsa, fire protection, safe public tours, the creation of adequate parking spaces, the designation of zones for cultivation, recreation, rental, environmental, educational, and cultural activities will be identified and costed.
The study is a contribution from the 'Friends of the Capodistrias Museum' association and is funded by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation. The preparation of the study and action plan has been undertaken by the environmental management company Technomoiostasi O.E., in collaboration with the consultant Ms. Olga Bakirtzi – a landscape architect and agronomist with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki (Ministry of Culture).
The aim is for the multi-purpose space of the former garage building and the surrounding Koukouritsa garden to function separately as well as synergistically in further promoting the Capodistrias Museum – Capodistrias Study Centre as a dynamic entity dedicated to the preservation and promotion of our cultural and natural heritage.
The Museum warmly thanks architect Angeliki Thymi for the architectural design and reuse plans of the building, the ELLAKTOR group for their support, the 'Friends of the Capodistrias Museum' association for funding the preliminary architectural study and the creation of the submission file for the LEADER programme, TOPOS for the project management, and ANION for their collaboration in the integration and implementation of the project.
Additionally, by autumn 2024, the protection and enhancement study-plan for the garden will be completed, covering the restoration and new uses of the entire Capodistrias Museum Garden.
