Deputy Minister of Transport in Corfu for 25th March celebrations

CORFU. National Independence Day will be celebrated on 25th March.

The parade for the celebration of the 25th March will take place in Corfu Town, with the government represented by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christina Alexopoulou.

In schools, pupils and teachers have already begun rehearsals for the parades that will take place on Monday, March 25, from one end of the island to the other, to honour the heroes of the Greek Revolution of 1821 who fought for the long-awaited freedom.

 

The parade in Corfu Town will take place at 12:45, with the participation of pupils, scouts, Philharmonic Bands, Security Forces, and Armed Forces, following the established route from Agoniston Polytechniou Street, Anapiron, and Thymata Polemou to the Old Palace.

The official doxology will take place at 11 in the morning at the Spiliotissis Metropolitan Church, presided over by the Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos, and the Diapontia Islands, Nektarios, followed by the speech of the day by Dr. Stella Voutsa, professor at the Ionian University. This will be followed by the memorial prayer and the customary laying of wreaths at the Town's Hero monument by all local authorities. Wreath-laying will also take place at the statue of Ioannis Capodistrias and at the statue of Dionysios Solomos before the parade.

The responsibility for organising the celebration programme of the National Anniversary lies with the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, which is expected to announce it in the coming days.

Friday 22 March

School celebrations for the national anniversary of March 25th will take place on Friday, March 22nd, and at 12:00, wreath-laying will follow at the Town's Hero monument by representatives of students, pupils in the presence of educational authorities, and an honorary guard with the participation of a Philharmonic Band.

As part of the events for the national holiday, Andreas Floros, the Dean of the Ionian University, invites those interestd to the online speech of Panayiota Manti, Assistant Professor of the Department of Environment at the Ionian University, on the topic "The Revolution of 1821 through the public sculpture of the Ionian Islands".
