CORFU. They burned the effigy of the Leader of the Greek Opposition, Stefanos Kasselakis, dressed in women΄s clothes as part of Carnival...

The organisers of the Moraitika Carnival chose to ridicule the Leader of the Greek Opposition, Stefanos Kasselakis, for his sexual orientation - rather than his political role - dressing and ultimately burning the SYRIZA president as the "Carnival King".

His effigy, named "Carnavolakis", had clear sexual references, with the photo of his face painted with red lipstick, a long, pink wig, women's underwear, and makeshift "constructions" like male genitalia.

It should be noted that hundreds of children participated in the event, thus experiencing, perhaps for the first time in their lives, the negative "model" of discriminatory behaviour.

Although during Carnival, sharp satire of current events is customary, this particular approach undoubtedly constitutes an unfamiliar insult to human rights and highlights the deep roots of the problem in Greek society.
