Work to repair Gastouri bridge begins
CORFU. The bridge was closed to pedestrians and vehicles as it was considered to be dangerous - It will reopen once the work is completed.
The Central Corfu Municipality will begin immediately the repair of the bridge leading to Pahatika in Gastouri. The Mayor Meropi Ydraiou signed the contract for the project today in the presence of the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros.
This old stone bridge had suffered serious damage which after Ballos became even worse, making it dangerous. Thus, it was closed to pedestrians and vehicles and will reopen once the work is completed.
The Municipality took the necessary steps to repair it from the very first moment. Due to subsidence, special geotechnical studies were also required, which have been completed. The findings of the studies were delivered by the Municipal Technical Services to the Archaeological Services which gave the final approval to proceed with the contract.
Following the signing of the contract, Mayor Meropi Ydraiou stated the following: "After methodical work, we are proceeding immediately to the repair of the bridge and I hope that very soon our fellow citizens will be able to use it again. This bridge is only one of the infrastructure that was not maintained and was further damaged due to the severe weather conditions. We are going to repair both these damage and the overall infrastructure for the benefit of the residents and our area.”
The project to repair the Gastouri bridge has a budget of €184,104 and it has to be completed in four months.
