Municipal Council approves pilot traffic scheme for Corfu Town with 15 votes for
CORFU. There was a long discussion at the Central Corfu Municipal Council meeting before it came to a vote.
There were 15 votes in favour of the proposal of Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou regarding the moderate pilot traffic measures in the historical centre of the town, based on the recommendation of the Corfu Traffic Department and the observations made by professional bodies.
Another proposal was put to a vote by the opposition, suggesting the cancellation of the measures and a decision to discuss the matter again following the prescribed procedure (Local Town Council-consultation-Quality of Life Committee-Municipal Council).
However, the opposition's proposal only received 11 votes, as several municipal councillors had already left the session.
In response to a question from Giorgos Karydis, Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos said that the Mayor's proposal was approved with 15 votes, which means the traffic measures will be put into effect.
The opposition, however, maintained until the end that the correct procedure for their implementation had not been followed since it requires a regulatory decision with the required majority (23 votes) to be valid.
